Chapter 5

The next morning. Fireworks which blew out white smoke were exploding in the sky above the “Singapore Indoor Stadium” where the Singapore Karate Tournament was being held.

There was strict security in the stadium. Police officers lined up along the staircases leading up to the entrance gate and the guests were allowed in the stadium only after their belongings were checked and they underwent a strict body check.

The audience seats, which were like stairs, surrounded the field where the competitors were lined up. The organizer, Zhong Han Chen was standing in front of a microphone and giving his opening speech. Horizontal to Zhong Han was a glass case which held the champion belt.

“Best of luck to our competitors!!”

Zhong Han crossed his arms in front of his chest strongly before swinging them down and right after that, the competitors and the guests cheered loudly.

The opening ceremony had ended and the tournament was about to start.

There were seven areas for the matches and hanging from the centre part of the ceiling was a multi-monitor which showed the profile pictures and points of the competitors.

The crowd became excited when the competitor who had the strongest chance of winning, Hazli Jamalludin stood up.

Jamaalludin who had put on his fist supporter glared at this tournament opponent with a sharp gaze. That pressure caused his opponent to cower for a split moment, however the opponent immediately raised his foot and stepped in.

The opponent struck with a sudden heel drop and Jamalludin moved his upper body to avoid it. After that came a back kick which also dodged with a large margin. Jamalludin closed his eyes.

“Small fry, huh—” Jamalludin thinly opened his eyes and unleased a powerful low kick, the knee of the leg which the opponent had his entire weight supported on buckled without fail and then Jamalludin raised his leg high and struck the side of the opponent’s head and knocked him down.

His tournament opponent’s face slammed into the mat as he took up a ready stance.

The next moment there was a loud cheer of “Uooohhhh–!!” from the audience stand.

Sonoko who was seated next to Ran and watching the match leaned forward from her seat without thinking.

“Haaee~. That guy called Jamalludin is ridiculously strong.”

“He has both speed and technique combined with his heavyweight-class power….He seems like a formidable opponent.”

Sonoko let out a small laugh when she saw Ran who was analyzing with a serious expression.

“I have expected that much from the captain of the Teitan High Karate Club. You notice things that others don’t.”

The referee announced the Jamaluddin’s victory and Jamalludin faced the front, the referee, and his opponent, bowing to each of them one after the other before leaving the stage.

“That person would definitely breakthrough the A block. And the one who wins B block will surely be Makoto-san! In other words, Makoto-san and that person will face each other in the Finals……Un.”

Sonoko tightly gripped onto the Tournament schedule which she had read carefully.

Kid and Conan were seated next to each other, a space away from Ran. Conan looked ahead while starting a conversation “Hey.”

“If the jewel ends up in Kyougoku-san’s hands, it means you won’t be able to get it, right?”

“Right. I don’t want to get close to him as far as possible.”

The two spoke to each other while still facing forward, and then Kyougoku Makoto entered to arena.  Sonoko who realised it first quickly took out her opera binoculars.

“Ah—Makoto-san is here! Come on, everyone cheer for him too!”

And then Sonoko, who turned to Ran and the rest who were seated by her side, looked at Conan and knitted her brows.

“….wait, why did you bring that local brat with you?”

“He gotten attached to me for some reason.”

Kid replied calmly.

Kyougoku’s tournament opponent was a huge man with the height of more than two metres. Even Kyougoku who had a height of a hundred and eight four centimetres seemed small.

“Bow to the altar! Bow to the referee! Bow to each other!”

Kyougoku lowered his head upon hearing the referee’s cues and then he lightly touched the plaster on his left brow.

“……?”

Sonoko who had noticed that gesture put down her opera binoculars and touched her own left brow as well.

“Match, start!”

As soon as the signal to start was given—Don! Kyougoku had launched a powerful strike at his opponents sternum. His opponent was sent flying onto the mat of the neighbouring match.

“He did it!! Makoto-san is so cool~~~~!!”

Sonoko let out a cheer while standing up, her two hands clasped in front of her chest.

“Ha! How I want to go meet him right now.”

Once she said that, Ran’s phone started ringing.

“Ah, Otou-san is–?!”

Inside the VIP room that had a glass panel in front of it and was located on the second floor was Leon who was viewing the match. Behind the sofa that Leon was seated on stood Jamaluddin with his arms crossed. The latter had finished his matches.

“That Kyougoku is strong.”

Leon let out an exclamation of amazement to Kyougoku who had won decisively in one blow early in the match. However, it would a problem if he was too strong. The plan was still in progress and even overlooking any small issue was not allowed—

“Should I at least attempt to do something about this?”

Leon took out his smart phone and made a call.

“It’s me….ah, yes. There is a favour I would like to ask……”

Ran who received the call from Kogorou left the audience seat and headed for the entrance to the stadium. Kid, disguised as Shinichi, and Conan followed her.

Then, they saw Kogorou who was in front of the metal detection gates placed at entrance having some sort of issue with the security guards.

“Didn’t I say that I’m not anyone suspicious?!”

“Otou-san? ! What happened?!”

Ran rushed over and Kogorou pointed at the security guards in an irritated manner.

“Ran, help me explain to these guys for me! I already took out all the metallic objects I have.”

In the tray that was on a table next to the gate was Kogorou’s wallet, keys, loose change, smartphone, lighter, his pants belt and so on.

“But even so!”

Kogorou went through the gate and the buzzer rang out.

“Is it alright already?!”

“No!”

Kogorou got stopped by the guard and he shouted “Damn~!”, stomping his feet.

“If this goes on, I won’t be able to go in!”

Then Rishi ran over.

“Mouri-san! Is everything okay?!”

“Rishi-san!”

“He’s a staff member. Please let him in.”

Rishi explained in English then the security guard said, “Yes Sir.” And moved away from the metal detection gate.

“Thank you! Mr Rishi!!”

“I’m glad I was able to meet up with you.”

Rishi smiled at Kogorou who deliberately thanked him in English”

“After the championship belt got unveiled during the opening ceremony, it is now being guarded in an underground vault. If you don’t mind, I can show you the way afterwards—But all things considered, where have you been?”

Kogorou who was putting on his belt that he took in the tray suddenly stopped with a gulp.

“Well, nothing much, I was just patrolling around a bit…..”

(Are you sure you didn’t oversleep because of a hangover?)

Conan took a jab within his heart, his hands interlocked behind in head.

Kogoro, Kid and Conan were taken to the underground vault with Rishi leading the way. In front of the underground vault stood security guards. Rishi showed them the keypad that was installed beside the door.

“The password changes every ten minutes. It’s controlled by a computer which lets us know via email.”

Rishi’s smart phone vibrated and the phone’s display lit up. The mail contained the password was sent to him.

“This only gets sent to Inspector Aiden and me as well as Leon-san who manages the vault, making it a total of three.”

While looking at his smart phone, he typed the password on the keypad. Conan, who was a short distance away as well as Kid who was standing with him, both stared hard at Rishi.

Rishi pressed the enter key and the door to the vault opened automatically.”

“What, this room has nothing in it as well.”

In the middle of this odourless dry room was a rectangular pedestal that was about a metre tall. On top of it was a transparent case that contained the Championship Belt.

“That’s not true. The floor has eight sensors and the ceiling has cameras. The case can also detect impact and the stadium is surrounded by police officers.”

Behind Kogoro who was standing in the front of the door, listening to Rishi’s explanation, was Conan, who peered into the vault.

“Oh-! If that’s the case, that phantom thief can’t do a thing.”

Kogorou said those words as he took out his cigarettes from the pocket of his pants. Just as he lightly lifted the lid to the box and took out a stick,

“Mouri-san, smoking prohibited here.”

Rishi informed him.

“Ah, I’m sorry about that.”

Kogorou  was going to return the box of cigarettes into his pocket when he noticed a name card stuck in between the box and its plastic packaging.

“Hm?

“What’s up, Kogorou Oji-san?”

“I got so drunk that I completely forgotten about this. She handed me this at the bar last evening saying that she had something to tell me.”

Kogorou lowered his hand that was holding the name card and Conan looked at it.

“That’s the name card of Leon-san’s secretary.”

“Ehh? Is that so? Actually got really drunk so I completely can’t remember. How did you know?”

“Leon-san’s company logo is on it.”

Conan turned Kogorou’s hand and looked at the back of the card. There was something handwritten on it.

”3 pm. Meet me at the back of the National Stadium Gate 3.” That’s what’s written here. It also says, “Tell no one”.”

“I see. Three pm huh?….”

When Conan finished talking, Kogorou put the name card in his shirt pocket then he grabbed the wrist of one of the security guard’s wrist and looked at the watch

“Isn’t that soon?!”

He released the security guard’s wrist and ran off.

“Ah, Mouri-san?!”

“It’s embarrassing for a man to make a lady wait!”

Rishi chased after Kogorou and Conan followed them behind. Conan took a glance behind him, turning his head and he saw Kid leaning against the wall, a fleeting smile appearing on his lips.

Kyougoku, who had finished changing his clothes, was alone in the competitor waiting room.

Just as Kyougoku put on his glasses in front of the mirror, the door opened. Leon entered the room.

“That was truly a splendid match. I look forward to the semi-finals and finals held tomorrow.”

“Thank you very much.”

“Your strength is special. So how about it? Do you have any desire to be my bodyguard?”

“Please excuse me.”

Kyougoku took his bag and headed out.

“Now, wait just a minute. Of course, that was just a joke. I actually wanted to ask you one thing.”

Kyougoku stopped in his steps and Leon turned and made a u-turn. “Tell me.” And he placed his hand on Kyougoku’s shoulder.

Leon’s cold and mysterious looking pupils captured Kyougoku’s reflection.

“For what reason do you have your steps? Is there something out there that makes you chase for strength? What exactly is driving you forward?”

Kyougoku was caught in Leon’s gaze and he was unable to shift his own eyes away. Kyougoku’s fingers moved slightly and lightly curled into a fist.

A knowing smile formed on Leon’s face.

“You can’t answer? An incomplete fist with no purpose is a dangerous one. And it won’t be just to you yourself, you will bring misfortune to the ones around you.”

“Around me? Misfortune……?”

“Correct. Such as…someone you love. Even you have someone like that don’t you? A person you can label as such?”

“Your fist is dangerous and it might hurt the person you love. If the situation should come to that, what are you going to do?”

Leon’s eyes narrowed and he smacked Kyougoku’s shoulder with a thump. Kyougoku’s eyes shot open as though he understood the implications.

“I look forward to tomorrow’s matches”

And Leon raised his hand lightly and left the waiting room.

Kyougoku, who got left behind stared into space blankly and his gaze shifted to his own fist. While staring quietly, thoughts ran through his head.

Then, there was a knocking sound.

“Now what……?”

Kyougoku raised his head and Sonoko popped her face out from behind the ajar door.

“Good job out there <3.”

“Sonoko-san……!”

“Geez, you just wouldn’t come so we came to see you instead.

“Sorry for making you wait.”

Kyougoku left the waiting room and Ran was there as well.

“Then, let’s all head out for lunch! There is this shop I really want to go to……”

“Sorry, Sonoko!”

Suddenly, Ran put her hands together in front of her face.

“The two of you can go for lunch without me.”

“Eh–? Why~~”

“I’m really sorry! But it seems like Shinichi can’t leave this place because he’s protecting the jewel.”

Sonoko replied with an “I see-“ when she heard the reason and nodded, convinced.

“Then, it can’t be helped –shall the two of us go then, Makoto-san.”

“Alright.”

“See you later then, Ran.”

“We’ll make a move first.”

Ran waved as the two walked off intimately. When she was no longer able to see the two, her expression quickly became grim.

The place designated by Rachael, that being the National Stadium consisted of the Indoor stadium which is part of a group of various sports facilities gathered together – the “Singapore Sports Hub”. The indoor stadium is a stadium which consisted of the world’s largest dome that could open and close.

Kogorou and Conan arrived at the front of Door number three as written in the name card but Rachael was not there.

“Seriously, she’s really late.”

“Did Rachael-san say anything else?”

“I already said I don’t really remember what happened. The only thing that I’m really sure of is that she’s a beauty!”

Conan sighed at Kogorou who replied that confidently

(Jeez. Get a hold of yourself already, Occhan….)

Inspector Aiden who giving orders to fellow police officers in front of the entrance of the Indoor Stadium.

“Now, be alert and look everywhere! If you see anything unusual, report it and act immediately! And……ah!”

“Kyaa!”

Inspector Aiden who was walking backwards while giving directions bumped into Rachael who was walking along.

“Are you okay? I’m so sorry.”

“I’m sorry too.

Rachael responded with a smile and walked off after giving a light bow.

Then when she walked some distance away from Inspector Aiden, a smartphone appeared in Rachael’s hand like magic.

An e- mail had been delivered to the smartphone. She smiled when she saw the contents of the mail.

“Inspector Aiden!”

Rachael rushed towards Inspector Aiden and she leaned towards  him, placing her left hand on Inspector Aiden’s left shoulder. Pretending to dust off his clothes, she slipped her right hand under his left arm pit and swiftly slipped the smartphone into his pocket.

“Sorry, I couldn’t help but notice.”

The sight of Rachael gazing upwards at him made Inspector Aiden’s heart skip a beat.

“I…I’m sorry, what…..”

“There you go!<3”

Rachael straightened Inspector Aiden’s tie and suddenly moved away from his body.

“Keep up the good work.”

“Yes, ma’am!”

Inspector Aiden whose heart started beating excitedly tried to hide that fact by saluting in a forceful manner.

Rachael ran off giving a light wave.

Rachael, whose back was now facing Inspector Aiden had a mysterious smile on her face.

Inside the security room of the Indoor Stadium were several security officers who had their eyes glued to the monitors and were checking the inside of the stadium.

“Everything okay with the safe?”

“Yes sir, everything is alright.”

Four monitors were displaying the inside of the vault from various directions but there was nothing strange that can be seen.

There were police officers in front of the vault acting as security. Then,

“Excuse me! I’m so sorry!”

Suddenly, Rachael dashed towards them with a frantic expression.

“Inspector Aiden is calling for the two of you urgently.”

“B, but……”

I’ll look after this place.”

“Okay. We’ll be back soon, thank you.”

The officers ran off leaving Rachael behind.

After seeing the officers move off a sufficient distance, Rachel smiled as though she had an ulterior motive.

“Well then….”

Rachael, who was standing in front of the vault dropped her skirt and at the same time, a white mantle covered her body. With a loud sound, the mantle flipped open revealing a pure white silk hat and a figure dressed head to toe in white – Kaito Kid.

“I’ll be taking the treasure.”

A bold smile appeared on Kid’s face and he installed a small device next to the vault door at the area which had a monitor. An antenna extended from the device and its display which was divided into four showed the inside the vault. It was the same as what was shown on the monitors in the security room, the view captured by the security cameras.

Kid inputted the password that was sent to Inspector Aiden’s phone.

The door opened automatically and he was able to see the Championship belt that was on the pedestal in the middle of the room.

Kid shot his wire gun at the part of the ceiling that was directly above the pedestal. A wire flew out of the muzzle of the gun and pierced into the ceiling and being pulled by wound up wire, he rose to the ceiling at one go and landed lightly on the pedestal.

The monitors in the security room that were displaying the inside of the vault had some static for a brief moment.

“Hmm….?”

The security guard raised his head to look at the monitor but the static had already disappeared and the image of a vault that had no one inside was shown.

Kid who had landed on the pedestal was in a crouching position and looking the Championship belt at his feet, he grinned.

“I’ll be taking this.”

The wire gun in his hand transformed and a glass cutter came out of the grip handle.

Then, a click sound came from the pedestal that was half covered by Kid’s mantle.

“? Huh, did something get caught?”

Kid looked down – the side of the pedestal opened and with a thump, something fell out.

“A body?! And it’s….”

That was Rachael’s body. There was a knife stabbed in her back. The same as Sherilyn Tan—

“Crap, I have to get out of here and fast!”

At the same time Kid kept his glass cutter, the alarm rang out. Red lights flickered, dying the room crimson.

Kid leapt off the pedestal and landed next to Rachael who was sprawled on the ground. Looking over Rachael’s body, he looked at the inside of the pedestal.

“Hm? There’s some letters……”

There were red words “She” written inside the pedestal.

Rachael, who had fallen over, had blood on the index finger of her right hand.

At that moment, he noticed that the door of the vault was slowing starting to close. He stood up at once and went towards the door.

Kid leapt before he reached the door and as he twisted his body sideways, he narrowly slipped through the gap and flew out into the corridor. Kid had tumbled onto the ground and as he got up, right before his eyes were gun wielding police officers running towards him.

“Stop right there–!!”

Kid swiftly fired his card gun. The cards released knocked the police officers’ guns out of their hands one after another. As he took a few more steps while holding his gun, another large group of police officers ran over from the right side corridor.

“Drop the gun, now!”

“Kid, you’re under arrest!”

Inspector Aiden was also running over, leading his police squad, from the left side corridor.

With the door to the vault behind him and being pursued by this large group, Kid pretended to lower his gun only to switch it to his left hand and he grinned. Then he dashed towards Inspector Aiden’s direction.

“?!”

At some unknown time, Kid’s wire gun had ended up in his right hand and while running, he fired his wire gun and leapt up high.

The wire pulled as it wound up and Kid leapt over Inspector Aiden’s head. Frantic to chase after kid, Inspector Aiden turned around only for the police team that was running behind him to crash into him one after another and they fell over each other in a pile.

Kogorou and Conan were waiting in front of door three of National Stadium for a while but Rachael never showed up at all.

“Hey, Rachael might not be coming at all, don’t you think?”

“Let’s wait for another ten minutes.”

Just when Conan said those words—an alarm rang out loudly. It came from the direction of the Indoor Stadium.

“Wh, what?”

“It might be Kid…….!”

Conan ran towards the direction of the Indoor Stadium.

“Ah, hey wait!”

Kogorou chased after Conan frantically.

Kid, who had escaped from the interior of the Indoor Stadium and ran to the paths outside left through the sealed off North exit. Were the large number of police officers who were with Inspector Aiden there? No one was there though.

Or so he thought when a team of police officers ran over from the opposite side.

“There he is! Over here!”

“Uwah! This is bad.”

Kid suddenly stopped in his tracks and turned back. The gun wielding police officers chased after him.

“But it’s my win once I can get out of here.”

Dorunn!

Sprinting as fast as he could, Kid started the engine on his back and the propeller that was folded up started to spin. At the same time Kid jumped, his hang glider sprung open and he flew above the officers who were running up the staircase. The propeller spun open and he rose up in one go.

“There were this many of them……!”

Kid looked down at the stadium from the sky and got surprised by the sheer number of officers outside the event area. He spotted Conan and Kogorou running over from the neighbouring National Stadium.

“Hey, wait!!”

Conan stopped running, looking up in the sky, and as his eyes met Kid’s, Kid flew up again—

“Go! Arrest him at any cost!”

Inspector Aiden, who had exited the North Exit with his squad of officers tailing behind him ran in the direction of where Kid was flying.

“Hey, come on, is this really okay?”

Kogorou stopped in his tracks and looked at the scene in a worried manner.

“There you are! Mouri-san, I was looking for you!”

Rishi had ran over from the direction of the national stadium.

“Man, this sure turned to a mountain of a problem. To think Kid would show himself in broad daylight………But don’t you worry.”

A confident expression appeared on Kogorou’s face.

“I, the great detective, Mouri Kogorou will start tracking him down immediately and arrest this phantom thief as soon as……”

“Now isn’t the time for that!”

“Eh?”

“Something terrible has happened! Please come to the vault now!”

Seeing Rishi’s peculiar expression and urgent tone, Conan had a bad premonition.

Look! There’s this giant bird in the sky!”

Kid’s hang glider flew above Saint Andrews cathedral, Singapore’s largest church, which was located in the Marina Bay City area.

Next to the people who were looking up at the sky were several patrol cars speeding down the road aggressively with their sirens on.

“We are chasing him into Coleman Street.

A police officer who was riding in one of the patrol cars used his wireless radio to report the situation then Inspector Aiden’s voice came out of the wireless.

“The other party is a world famous thief, moreover, he’s a suspect in a murder case. Don’t let him get away! If the situation calls for it, you have my permission to use your firearms in the city!”

There was a road where parking lots were lined up along its side and no one passed through.

After surveying the area from above, Kid closed his propeller and landed. Then he slid along the ground as he came to a stop.

“Now that I’ve made it this far….”

During the time when he caught his breath –a screech – the sound of brakes being stepped on, suddenly came from behind him. A patrol car had rushed in from an adjacent alley.

“Guh!”

Kid quickly pulled out his card gun.

Then, policemen ran out of the patrol car and fired all at once. The dry sound of shots being fired – bang, bang, bang – rang out.

Rishi led Kogorou and Conan to the vault in the Indoor Stadium, running all the way there and then they stood in front of the door as he opened it.

“Wh, what…..”

Kogorou let out a sound when he stared at the body of the woman who had fallen next to the pedestal in the centre of the room.

“Rachael-san?!”

Kogorou was shocked and he looked at the body again.

“I see….It wasn’t that she did not go to the place where she arranged to meet up, it was that she couldn’t….”

Rishi muttered “What a tragedy.”

“Have you checked the surveillance cameras?”

Kogorou asked Rishi who said “It’s no good” while looking down.

“Someone hacked into them and showed a feed of the place not having anyone inside over and over.”

“So, do you have a suspect?”

“Of course. Right now, we’re wasting no effort in chasing him down.

“Chasing him down, you mean……”

“There’s no mistake, the culprit is Kaito Kid!”

Rishi bluntly said, cutting him off. Conan who was standing next to Kogorou, pondering, raised his head. Rishi then entered the vault.

Conan looked around the inside of the room. There was a mark left behind by Kid’s wire gun on the ceiling right above the pedestal.

(In any case, not disabling the security alarms beforehand was a mistake on your part, Kid.)

Rishi seem to firmly believe without doubt that the culprit was Kaito Kid. Conan called his attention with a childish tone saying “Hey, you know.”

“If it was true, then at that time, Rachael-san should be meeting this Oji-san at the National Stadium, right? Why was she in the vault then?”

“Oh, come to think of it, that’s true.”

Kogorou said, agreeing with that statement. Rishi replied immediately.

“According to the officers who were stationed in front of the vault, Rachael came over to tell them that Inspector Aiden needed them for something. Perhaps it seemed urgent so they prioritised that? This disturbance happened right after that.”

“But I never heard anything about Kid being a murderer.”

Next to Kogorou who had an unconvinced expression , Conan was deep in thought.

The Rachael who came over to the vault was most likely Kid in disguise. In order to make the officers leave the vault, he had to disguise as someone the officers could trust and furthermore, not someone they would meet in the Indoor Stadium—

Conan looked at Rachael’s body again and he noticed that there was blood on her right index finger.

“Ah, hey! Don’t just barge in! There he goes again!”

Conan ran into the room and around the pedestal, getting on one knee next to the body. Then he saw the words written in blood “She” on the inside of the pedestal.

“Hey, there’s some words written in blood here….”

“You!!”

Kogorou who had entered the room as well lifted Conan up from behind by his collar.

“Brats should stay outside!”

Conan was sent out into the corridor.

Turning his head back to the vault, he saw that Rishi and Kogorou were starting to investigate and Conan walked off as he could not do much.

(You have been completely set up, haven’t you, Kid.)

Kid walked in an unsteady manner on a road which had few people and was lit by the setting sun.

Leaning against a wall, he breathed painfully, his shoulders heaving. He was pressing his hand against his left shoulder to stop the blood. There was blood on his face as well.

“……Fu….Bring it on……, things have become….interesting, hasn’t it?”

With a smile, Kid muttered those words then his face twisted with a wince before he slid down against the wall and collapsed on the spot.
