Chapter 6

Inside “Maxwell Food Centre”, that is, a hawker centre in Chinatown, there were large numbers of people enjoying their meal.

“Thanks for the food.”

Kyougoku Makoto placed his spoon on his empty plate.

“Just as expected from something selected by Sonoko-san, the chicken rice and watermelon juice were both delicious.”

“I know right?”

Sonoko who was looking at Kyougoku eat smiled in delight.

“……What?”

Kyouguky noticed Sonoko’s gaze and raised his head, then Sonoko averted her gaze, frantic.

“W, well, now that our stomachs are full. Makoto-san, there is one place that I would like to go.”

“I’ll go with you no matter where it is.”

The two of them stood up and Sonoko started to sling the bag she had placed on her lap onto her shoulder—when suddenly a man holding a tray walked behind her and bumped into her.

“Kyaa!” “”Woah!”

Clang! The tray landed on the floor and the chicken rice that was on it fell as well.

“Ah~, my chicken rice!”

“Uwah, this looks bad!”

At some point of time, another man came over, yelling loudly in English.

“Hey girl, what are you going to do about this?”

The duo who had rough appearances threatened Sonoko.

“Wer……weren’t you the one who bumped into me?!”

“Huh?! I don’t know what you mean! C’mere!”

The man reached his arm out for Sonoko. Then Kyougoku stepped out and grabbed onto the man’s arm tightly.

“Shit!”

The man drew out a knife from the pocket of his pants and swung it around. Without difficulty, Kyougoku twisted the man’s arm behind his back. In addition, he gave a side kick into the back of the man who seemed like he was in pain.

The man was sent flying to the table at the back, sweeping the plates on it off and sending the table flying. The customers who were around screamed and ran out.

(T/N: The tables at Maxwell food centre are actually bolted to the ground, so the guy would realistically break his neck or back first before he sends the table flying.)

The companion of the knife wielding man was closing in on Kyougoku and Sonoko.

“They may have other companions. Sonoko-san, please stay close to me.”

“O, ok!”

The man’s companion took out a weapon made up of three rods linked together and started lashing out after assembling it into one long rod. Kyougoku lightly avoided the blows and the man swung the rod at them over and over.

“Kyaa!”

Kyougoku quickly bent his body forward and it seemed like Sonoko, who was behind him, was going to be hit by the rod.

Crap—Kyougoku swiftly straightened his upper body and he unleashed a hand knife at the man’s neck.

The man collapsed and Kyougoku looked at his own hand that had struck the man. Leon’s words crossed his mind.

“Your fist is dangerous and it might hurt the person you love.”

Oryaaaa!”

At that moment, the man who was holding a knife dashed forward from his right side.

Kyougoku caught the knife between two fingers and stopped the attack and with the same arm, he gave a huge swing, sending the man flying.

With a thump, the man landed on the ground and cowering under the table, Sonoko’s shoulders jolted. She opened her eyes fearfully—And she noticed a patrol car driving slowly past the open back door.

I have to call for help, Sonoko dashed out from under the table.

“Sonoko-san!”

Kyougoku tried to chase after her,

“Hwachaaaaaa-!!”

Knocking out a stall in a bombastic manner, a new man had shown up. The man who took up a Kung-Fu stance seemed to the strongest he had seen by far.

The man who had the three segmented rod crept up behind Kyougoku and Kyougoku who was facing the Kung-Fu man directed his gaze over his shoulder.

Sonoko ran out from the back door and she ended up on a small road which did not have much people. From end to end of the road were cars parked alongside in parking lots but the patrol car was nowhere in sight.

Before she reached a corner slightly up ahead, Sonoko ran while looking around her. And once she turned the corner up ahead, she saw the patrol car she saw from the shop parked there.

“Found it! Help!!”

Sonoko ran as she yelled out – the rear seat door opened and two police officers tumbled out of it. It seemed like they had lost consciousness and they landed on the road motionless.

The patrol car with had sirens on top of it suddenly accelerated and made a sharp turn, heading straight in Sonoko’s direction.

“Ataaaaaa!!”

The Kung Fu man whom Kyougoku was going up against suddenly let our sharp blow. Handling the blows without much effort, Kyougoku turned to his back towards the man with the three segmented rod.

Kyogoku crouched downwards, dodging the Kung Fu man’s roundhouse kick and his thrusted a strong kick into the man’s sternum. The Kung Fu man got blown away, colliding with the three segmented rod man and the two fell together. At that moment,

“Kyaaaaa!”

Sonoko’s scream came from far away.

(Sonoko-san?!)

During the moment Kyougoku got distracted,

“Uwoooohhh!!”

The three segmented rod man attacked again. Kyougoku used the side of his hand to snap the rod that was coming down at him and a split second after that, he launched a kick into the man’s face.

The Kung Fu man also flew over to continue fighting. Kyougoku kicked against a pillar to jump into the air and he sent a flying kick into the Kung Fu man’s face.

Kyougoku, who had defeated the men, immediately ran out of the back door to the outside.

He ran in the direction of people’s voices and when he made a turn, he saw about ten people surrounding something. They were making a lot of noise about something in English.

Could it be—Kyougoku approached the centre and saw Sonoko lying on the ground, injured.

“….Sonoko-san……”

In an instant, Kyougoku’s mind went black. He immediately came back to his senses and rushed to her side, lifting her up.

“Sonoko-san……Sonoko-san…..Sonoko-san!”

He called her name out desperately but Sonoko did not react and her eyes remained shut.

A look of despair appeared on Makoto’s face as the sound of an ambulance’s siren reached his ears–

At the waiting room of the hospital where Sonoko was sent to, there was not much people as it was already night. Conan and the rest were the only ones there. At the back of the waiting room was a cleaner who had hung up his mop and on the bench was Kyouguku by himself bent over, with his elbows on his knees and his head facing the ground.

After a while, Ran came over after asking a doctor about the situation.

“How’s her injuries?

Kogorou asked in a worried manner.

“He said her life isn’t in any danger but because she’s still sleeping, they’re admitting her overnight and then it seems like they’ll check her tomorrow.

Ran put her hand on her chest saying “That’s really great……”

“Seriously, such a horrible hit-and-run accident is simply unforgivable!!”

“……It’s my fault.”

Suddenly, Kyougoku who had his head hanged muttered.

“It’s because of me that Sonoko-san….”

Kyougoku was terribly depressed. Ran and Kogorou could not say anything to him. Then Rishi came over, running.

“I kept you guys waiting. My apologies for being late.”

“Oh, thanks for your hard work. How did the investigation go?”

“The accident took place at the back alley where not much people pass so we don’t have any witnesses…..To be more accurate, there were people there but they were taken by surprise when the patrol car got stolen and they got knocked out.”

Conan listened to Rishi’s report while thinking about what could have happened then Rishi called out “Kyougoku-san”.

“You were with Sonoko-san all the way until she got into the accident, right?”

“Yes. We got attacked by these men while we were eating……so, where are those three people now?”

Kyougoku asked and Rishi bowed his head looking ashamed, saying “About that….”

“When we rushed over to the scene, they were no longer there. We think they might be hoodlums who territory is at that area but……”

Conan spoke to Kyougoku saying “Hey, I wanna ask…”

“Why did the two of you get attacked?”

“I don’t know. They suddenly came over to us…”

“H—m. But why did Sonoko-nee chan leave Kyougoku-san’s side? She should be safer if she was with you.”

When Kyougoku heard Conan’s words, he felt a stabbing pain in his chest.

At that time, Kyougoku did not know that she saw the patrol car from the back entrance so he did not understand why Sonoko left the place by herself.

With a “Haa” Rishi let out a sight.

“One incident after another….that’s really too much to handle.”

“What happened to Kid?”

Conan asked.

“It seems like he escaped some time earlier. We’re searching for him at the moment……speaking of which, kid. Isn’t it about time you returned home?

Crap, just as Conan was thinking that,

“I hope I’m not intruding.”

Leon, with a bouquet of flowers, showed up.

“Leon-sensei! What are you doing here?”

“I rushed over as soon as I heard about the accident.”

“Sonoko is still sleeping though….”

Ran said and Leon held the bouquet out.

“Then can you give these to her on my behalf?”

“Alright. Thank you very much.”

Leon, who handed the flower bouquet over, turned his head towards Kyougoku who was seated on the bench. Then he knelt down on one knee in front of Kyougoku.

“It seems like my worries were right on the mark.”

Leon’s eyes which were staring at Kyouguku held an icy chill somewhere among the look of thanks.

“The God of fighting is testing you. It seems like you do not yet have the mind, body and spirit required to wield your fist……I know, let me give you an amulet.”

Leon searched in the pocket of his jacket then he wrapped a string around Kyougoku’s right wrist. With the same cold mysterious eyes, Kyougoku was caught in his gaze.”

“It’s something like a good luck charm bracelet. If this breaks, then it’s a sign that the God acknowledges that your mind, body and spirit is prepared. If you swing your fists before it breaks……I believe you know what will happen, right?”

Kyougoku who was staring at Leon’s eyes, fascinated, was not aware. Weaved inside the charm bracelet was a steel wire—

Leon stood up and lightly bowed his head at Kogorou and the rest before heading for the exit.

While seeing Leon off with the rest, a cleaner who had finished his cleaning duties passed them from behind and Conan shot a fleeting glance at that person.

When Conan walked out to the roof of the hospital, he saw Kid cleaning the wound on his shoulder next to the water storage tanks.

Next to Kid was the cleaner’s uniform which he had removed and left on the ground as well as a bag containing medical supplies which he stole from the hospital.

“Ow!”

“You look like a mess.”

Conan spoke from the shadows of the water tanks.

“This kind of damage is nothing. Geez, for them to come shooting at me without hesitation…I was really outwitted this time.”

“They’re making Rachael-san’s murder out to be your doing. It’s a trap intended to frame you for the crimes.”

Conan said those words as he approached Kid. Kid, who was in the midst of roughly wrapping himself with bandages, stopped and raised his head.

“It’s almost like magic. I was not there at all but to the audience watching, I certainly appear to be a murderer who may have been there.”

“In other words, as long as you change your perspective, you can see the way the trick was done….?”

Unexpectedly, Kid’s mantle suddenly spread out, blocking Conan’s view. When the mantle came down, Kid, wearing his white silk hat and suit was standing there.

“Yea. A magician makes a person think as though there may be something in their clenched fist and a detective reveals what’s inside correctly before the fist is open, right?”

Kid turned his head which a grin on his face then he walked straight past Conan.

(Hm?)

Something weighed heavily in Conan’s hand and he looked at his arms—his criminal tracking glasses, voice changing bow tie, anesthetic watch gun as well as his ball shooting belt have been returned to him.

Turning his head in surprise, Kid had lightly jumped on top of a large pipe.

“Guess what’s inside, great detective. The contents of the mysterious clenched fist known as murder.”

Kid showed Conan his open hand and then with a flip of his mantle, he leapt from the piping and opened his hang glider in an instant, soaring into the night sky.

“….Jeez.”

That’s easy for you to say—While Conan looked up at the hang glider flying in the night sky, he pocketed his gadgets.

Rishi, who walked out of the hospital and was about to get in his car which he had stopped at the side of the traffic circle, saw Conan next to one of the pillars looking down in a despondent manner.

“Kid, you’re not going home yet?”

“Hey…Can I stay over at your place tonight?”

“Ehh?! My house?”

“Even if I go home, I’ll be by myself.”

Rishi who heard those words stepped away from his car and walked towards Conan. Conan raised his head.

“And with all that’s just happened, I’m scared……If I say that I’m with Rishi-san, I’m sure mom and dad would be relieved.”

With a nnnggh…… Rishi had a troubled expression. Then Conan averted his gaze.

(It would be the absolute worst spending two consecutive nights with that guy…..)

Yesterday, Conan who had slept in the same bed as Kid was not able to sleep because of Kid’s snoring and horrible sleeping posture.

(T/N: Bed…BED?! The movie showed different bed, same room though. XD *gets slapped)

“Please!”

Conan put both his hands together and Rishi continued to think saying “Nghhhhhhhh……”

As Singapore had little land space, most of her citizens live in Mansion type apartments known as [HDB]. Rishi’s own home was also on the upper levels of a high-rise mansion.

The room was not wide but it had been cleaned up well. The living room shelf was decorated with photos of a person who seems to be Rishi’s father as well as large numbers of medals and crests.

“Wow, amazing! Did you get all these from your dad, Rishi-san?”

“Yeah. My father was an oceanographer. Sadly, he passed away five years ago. But during the course of his research, he found ancient things that have sunk in the ocean.”

“You must be proud of him, right.”

Conan said that and Rishi muttered a “Yeah”, praising him as well.

“Anyway I still have some work left to do so you can go to sleep first, Arthur-kun.”

“O-K.”

Conan replied energetically then suddenly set his sights in the direction of the desk. On the wall in front of the desk was a map of Singapore and its surrounding areas. There were red marks on certain areas of it.

“Hey, Rishi-san, what are those red marks on this map?”

“Ah, those mark the areas where ships were attack by pirates.”

“There’s pirates even now?”

“There are. Long ago, there were lots of them around Singapore.”

“What were the pirates looking for? Is it money?”

Conan asked and Rishi looked at the map muttering a “yeah”.

“But their methods have changed a lot from the past.”

“Ehhh.”

“They get close to large tankers with a small boat and board the vessels. When the crew members notice them, their boat would have already been hijacked. The pirates would then seize the shipment and take the crew members hostage while demanding ransom for their release.”

As Rishi said those words, he pressed the enter key of his notebook style laptop which had entered sleep mode. It came out of its sleep mode and went to its login screen.

“Well, rather than pirates, I’m more concerned about the murder case. And then there’s Kaito Kid on top of this as well……I borrowed some materials from Inspector Aiden but it seems like I’ll be pulling an all-nighter tonight……”

After Rishi typed his password on the login screen, Conan armed his anesthetic watch.

At the same time Rishi pressed the enter key, the anesthetic needle landed straight on the vein of his neck.

Rishi raised his head in surprise but very quickly, he became drowsy and collapsed on the spot.

(I feel bad having to do this to Rishi-san but I’ll let him have a good nap.)

Conan kept his watch in his pocket and went towards the desk.

Climbing onto the chair, Conan placed his hand on the mouse and used the laptop to look through the data about the case.

In the dimly lit waiting room, Kogorou and Ran were sleeping, leaning against each other.

Kyougoku was inside Sonoko’s hospital room. The room was lit slightly by the table lamp and he sat next to the bed, watching Sonoko as she slept.

Without thinking, the charm bracelet wrapped around the hand he placed on his knee entered his vision. At the same time, Leon’s words crossed his mind.

“If this breaks, then it’s a sign that the God acknowledges that your mind, body and spirit is prepared. If you swing your fists before it breaks……I believe you know what will happen, right?”

“Hey, what’s that? Did you make it?”

Kyougoku raised his head, surprised by the voice and Sonoko was looking at him and smiling.

“Sonoko-san! You’re awake?!”

“Fu fu, actually I was awake for quite a while already.”

Kyougoku leapt up from his seat and with a haaa……let out a sigh of relief.

“I’m so glad! I really am……”

“Hey, about that. Is it some kind of good luck charm?”

“Eh, ehh……something like that.”

On reflex, Kyougoku hid the charm bracelet with his left hand.

Sonoko who stared at Kyougoku’s hidden right wrist for a while threw off her covers with a “Yop”

“Don’t do that. You need to rest.”

“I don’t feel sleepy at all.”

Sonoko raised her left hand and stared at the wrist band used to identify patients on her wrist.

“We specially made a trip to Singapore and yet it’s so boring.”

“It’ll be bad for your body if you do too much. Please take it easy for tonight.”

Kyougoku said as he straightened the blankets. As Kyougoku’s face got close, the plaster over his left brow entered her vision.

“Hey, I’ve been wanting to ask you this for a while, but why don’t you ever remove the plaster that you have over your left brow?”

“N, no, this is nothing much, really……”

Kyougoku covered the plaster with his hand and hurriedly went towards the window.

That shifty behavior made Sonoko uneasy.

Whether it was about the charm bracelet or the plaster, why won’t he tell me anything–.

Sonoko rolled over so that her back was facing Kyougoku and buried her head under her covers.

The dawn of the next day. Leon’s car stopped in front of a shipyard which had been closed for a long time.

Leon and  Jamaluddin got out of the car at the dock which connected to the pier and stood at its end.

The beautiful moon was reflected on the surface of the ocean which did not have much waves.

Then, from the direction of the ocean which had not become fully dark, they could hear the sound of a boat running.

Coming alongside and mooring to the pier was a small boat with an engine attached to it. There were three men riding on it. Standing at the front of the boat was a long haired man in his mid-fifties wearing a Chinese styled shirt. He stared at Leon who was wearing sunglasses.

“I thought we were not supposed to meet until everything was done?”

Leon said without looking at the party that was on the boat.

“You said that your plan was perfect but are you completely sure?”

“Tch, you have a tough exterior but you’re actually a coward.”

Leon snorted and the man frowned.

“Now, watch that mouth of yours.”

One of the man’s subordinates who was in the same boat stood up and got onto the pier. Then, Jamaluddin executed a round house kick and the man fell into the ocean. With a back kick, the second man was sent flying as well.

Leon looked in the direction of the man who was left in the boat and a cold smile rose onto his face.

“I always keep my promises.”

Kid was above a crane which towered over the quay where boats dock.

Kid was wearing night vision goggles which could take photos and he zoomed in to Leon and the rest who were at the pier. Then he zoomed at the face of the man who was riding on the boat and pressed the shutter.

“You bite me and I bite you back. That’s how I do things.”

As he watched Leon and Jamaluddin leave the pier, Kid used his hang glider and flew into the sky which was breaking into dawn.
