Chapter 8

There was a gigantic tanker approaching off the shores of Singapore’s sea.

From behind the tanker that was moving at about twenty seven kilometres per hour, a small boat approached at a ferocious speed.

The small boat had several armed pirates on board. As it closed in on the back of the ship, it started to move alongside it, then one of the pirates hooked a ladder onto the rails of the tanker.

One after another, the pirates climbed up the ladder and got onto the deck. The pirates armed themselves with guns and after ensuring that there was no one on the deck, they went towards the bridge.

“Hands in the air!”

The door to the bridge opened and the pirates barged their way in quickly, pointing their guns at the crew members. In no time, the man who seemed to be the head of the pirates walked into the bridge that was under the pirates’ control, gun at a ready position.

That was the long haired man who met with Leon Lowe at the pier at dawn.

At that moment, Leon, who had returned to his house, was facing Nakatomi Reijirou at the reception of his office. Behind Reijirou was a number of bodyguards while behind Leon was Jamaluddin who was standing there with his arms crossed.

“You and I are very much bound together by fate, once this plan succeeds, we’ll be partners.”

Leon, who was seated on a single person sofa with his legs crossed and his hand placed on them, said this and Reijirou grinned.

“I’m counting on you. I’m truly indebted to you. I was suspected of theft and it looked like the police were gonna take me in, but it was you saving me that started it all. After that, there were many other things that happened.”

At that time, he was accused of theft by some man who seemed rich. Reijirou was frantic at that time but got saved by Leon who happened to be there and intervened.

“Because I knew that you were the Nakatomi Reijirou. You were the son of the one they call Japan’s King of Sea trade, Nakatomi Juuzou—”

“Don’t mention my dad’s name!”

Reijirou suddenly became sullen and frowned, but Leon still showed a smile.

“Ah, I apologise for that. In any case, all that will change tonight. How about we watch that moment from nearby?”

“……”

“Come, let’s go together. So we can witness the start of something that will written in the pages of Singapore history!”

Behind Leon who was smiling broadly was a painting of the city of Singapore. However, it was not the current Singapore. There were futuristic buildings standing side by side, and on every building was the logo of Leon’s company.

Conan and Kid, disguised as Shinichi, left Suntec City and ran along the wide streets of Beach Road.

“What the heck do you want to confirm with Detective Mouri?”

“Something that can be detected by the metal detector!”

Conan thought back to the metal detectors that were at the Indoor Stadium.

“On the first day of the even, didn’t Occhan get stopped? What if he was carrying something that reacted to the metal detector and he did not even know? Something that was entrusted to him without him knowing. It was something important and if we’re talking about someone who came into contact with Occhan then……”

“The secretary, Rachael……!”

Kid recalled what Ran said at the Café. His shirt got ruined by alcohol that got spilled onto it. If she only wanted to get close to Kogorou, there was no need to do something as ridiculous as spilling alcohol on him.

The case which contained Kogorou’s passport was always hanging off his neck. Rachael must have slipped something into it while trying to wipe the alcohol off him–.

Inside the Prawn Mee shop, Kogorou had snacked on prawn noodles and fried food and got himself drunk on alcohol as well.

“Hyaa?”

“Sorry, Occhan!”

Conan excused himself and entered and Kid went around behind Kogorou and trapped the man’s arms behind his back, he made him stand up.

“Eh–? What’s this all of a sudden?!”

Conan stood on a chair and started feeling around Kogorou’s shirt at his chest area.

“A hya hya hya hya hya, no! Stop it! Pervert~~~~!!”

Pulling up his shirt, the case which carried his passport could be seen.

“!!This is it!”

Other than the passport, there was a medal inside the case as well. Conan took the medal from the case and  held in on his palm.

The medal had the words “NAKATOMI” and a boat embossed onto it.

“Nakatomi….?”

“Nakatomi……As in Nakatomi Shipping?”

Kid released Kogorou who he had his arms pinned.

“Most likely…. Occhan! I’ll be borrowing this!”

Conan gripped onto the medal and ran out of the shop. Kid followed behind him.

Kogorou who was half stripped down and lying on the floor looked at the two run off with a blank expression.

“Did that brat….call me Occhan just now? Hic……Whatever, I’ll just go back to the hotel and drink some more–!”

Conan and Kid left the shop and ran onto the streets. Conan was watching a piece of news about Nakatomi Reijurou which was shown in Japan on his smartphone.

In the video clip, Reijurou was standing in front of a grand looking house, surrounded by reporters.

“Why did you suddenly leave Japan?”

“For a vacation, a vacation.”

“You also went to Singapore five years ago, correct?”

“Yeah and I’ve been there since. So what?!”

The clip of an irritated looking Reijirou became smaller and the studio cast appeared.

“President Nakatomi is currently arrested under the suspicion of bribing Politicians. His relationship with the Fukushima Minister……”

“So that’s the guy who was at the Merlion park.”

After watching the news clip, Conan realised that Reijirou was the man who spoke to Sonoko at the Merlion Park.”

“Though he got taken out by that Karate guy.”

Kid grinned and then Conan’s smart phone vibrated, the display changing to one that indicated that he was receiving a call.

It was from Haibara—Conan tapped the reply button and put the phone against his ear.

“Oh, Haibara? Did you find out who that man is?”

Yeah. Somewhat. His name is Eugene Lim. And shockingly, he’s a pirate.”

“Pirate?”

“Recently, there’s been eyewitness reports about him in Singapore.”

Conan exchanged glances with Kid who was listening next to him and nodded.

“I knew you could do it, Haibara! I can really rely on you!”

“The fact that you’re flattering means there’s something else you want me to look into, right?”

“Ye, yeah. Have you heard of the name Nakatomi Reijirou? He’s related to Nakatomi Shipping….”

“I know who he is.”

Haibara answered immediately.

“I want to know the status of all the ships owned by Nakatomi Shipping. It’s alright if it’s just the ships that are around Singapore.”

“……Alright. Give me a bit of time.”

When Conan received a call from Haibara once more, it was the time Conan and Kid were crossing the bridge that led towards Merlion Park. They could see the Marina Bay Sands being bathed in the setting sun.

“There are two cargo ships and one tanker in the vicinity of Singapore. What I’m a little curious about is that the oil tanker is deviating from its planned route.

“That’s the one. Please send me the data about the tanker.”

“Ok! I’ll contact you again.”

“I’ll be counting on you!”

Conan hung up the call and put his smartphone in his pocket.

“What’s this about an oil tanker?”

Kid asked.

“It’s the word “She” that Rachael-san wrote down. The “She” can also refer to a “Ship”!”

Conan took the medal out and flipped it with his finger. When it fell, he caught it and showed Kid the ship embossing that was on the medal.

“! I see.”

Now everything made sense—Kid gleefully put his hand under his jaw.

Kid called Rishi over via phone.

The place where they arranged to meet was on the street near the pier at the Merlion park where they first met.

Unlike how it was in the daytime, the human traffic in the evening was sparse.

“Is what you told me over the phone true? How could everything that happened until now be part of Leon-sensei’s  plans….I would like you to explain so that I can understand.”

Rishi who appeared at the place they arrange to meet said those words with a look of disbelief.

“It all started with that Blue Sapphire—that is “Fist of Blue Sappphire” that  Zhong Han Chen found.”

Kid, in Conan’s place, started to give his deduction as Kudou Shinichi.

“He embedded that in the belt for the Karate Tournament and that will be presented to the winner.”

“Leon-san sent Jamaluddin-san to participate in the tournament so that he can get his hands on the jewel.”

Conan said, continuing the deduction.

“However, an unexpected thorn appeared. It was the participation of Kyougoku Makoto who had gone undefeated in four hundred fights. And the one who invited him was – Sherilyn Tan who was killed later.”

“Even if that was the motive, Leon-sensei has an alibi. When she got stabbed, he was in another elevator……”

Rishi looked like he could not accept that deduction and Kid called out his name.

“Rishi-san. Here’s what really happened.”

Kid stuck his hand in his pocket and started to walk. When he went past Rishi, he stopped and turned his head around.

“After meeting with Leon at the side of the pool that was on the roof of the hotel, she returned to her own room by taking the elevator. However, the room she had been staying in was on the sixteenth floor of tower Three. Due to the design of the hotel, she couldn’t go back without transferring to a different elevator on the thirty-fourth floor. So in the middle of returning to her room, she got drugged and was forcibly taken to another room. By secretary Rachael.”

Rishi’s eyes widened.

“Rachael was an accomplice? It can’t be….”

“On that day, the room for guests that Leon reserved that day solely to enter the poolside restaurant was on the thirty fourth floor. Then, Leon who came down stabbed Sherilyn-san to death in that room. Putting her body in a suitcase, he left the room and the two each took separate elevators down. And as for their trick, she probably used a magic knife of some sort.  As long as she made a tear to her clothes in advance and used that device that released blood upon impact. The blood was Sherilyn-san’s own.”

From the point of view of a professional, that could only be considered a mere gimmick rather than magic—Kid laughed within his heart.

“Pretending to have been stabbed, Rachael collapsed. Right after that, a car exploded in the underground carpark and the shopping mall fell into a state of panic. And when the murder scene was being flooded by people who were fleeing the scene, Leon covered Rachael, who pretended to be dead, with a piece of cloth. Then without anyone noticing, she wore a coat and left the place. After that, Leon took Sherilyn’s body from the suitcase and laid it on the ground, replacing the cloth. All this went unnoticed in the midst of the power outage caused by the explosion.”

“Tha, that can’t be……”

Rishi muttered weakly and Conan who was beside him looked up. Kid continued the deduction.

“Rachael who knew of Leon’s real plan got scared and she intended to tell Detective Mouri everything. And Leon realised that.”

Kid walked towards the direction of the sea and Conan followed behind him.

“Wasn’t she killed by Kid….”

“That’s not correct.”

Conan, who was intending to approach Kid, stopped and turned his head.

“The Rachael who entered the vault was actually Kid in disguise. Kid was used in Leon-san’s plan too. The real Rachael had already been killed and stuffed inside the pedestal. He predicted that Kid was going to attempt to steal the “Fist of Blue Sapphire” again and did that to create an alibi for himself as well as pin the crime on Kid.”

“But why would he do such….”

“Then it were you, Rishi-san, who do you think it’d be safe to disguise yourself as?”

Rishi responded with “Eh, who would I….” when he heard Conan’s question and started thinking.

“No matter how well I disguised myself, it would all go to waste if the real person suddenly appeared….”

“So it’d be fine if you knew the time and place the person would be in advance, right?”

When heard Conan’s words, Rishi raised his head exclaiming : “I get it!”

Rachael had arranged to meet Mouri-san at three pm. Then….”

“Yup. Kid disguised himself as someone unlikely to go to the vault—and by doing so, he fell right into Leon-san’s trap because Leon-san had predicted it.”

Conan smiled mockingly and Kid who was standing in front of the steps clicked his tongue.

Rishi quickly went next to Kid.

“Please tell me! What is my teacher trying to do?!”

“It’s all for a foolish plan.”

Kid who was seated on the steps showed his smartphone which had the picture of the secret meeting location with Eugene Lim.

“Leon came into contact with the head of pirates, Eugene Lim……And the words left in the pedestal where Rachael’s body was found, “She”. Also, the object that Rachael secretly entrusted Detective Mouri with, the medal belonging to Nakatomi Shipping. All these things point towards a ship.”

“What does that have to do with anything….”

“Rishi-san!”

This time, it was Conan who showed Rishi the image on his smart phone.”

“I had a detective nii-san send me this from Tokyo. It’s an analysis of the routes that the ships owned by Nakatomi Shipping are taking in this area. There is one tanker that is deviating greatly from its planned route.”

The arrow that showed the tanker’s predicted route had curved greatly midway.

“If it continues along this trajectory, it’ll end up at Marina Bay. Leon-san plans on using the pirates the make the tanker crash into the city.”

Even with so much evidence pointing towards the truth, it was difficult for Rishi to suddenly believe all of it.

“Firstly, why would my teacher need to do that? What’s the reason?!”

“I don’t know what Leon-san will say…”

Conan turned to look away from Marina Bay. On the other side of the shore were wide beautiful streets being bathed in the rays of the setting sun.

“Leon-san was obsessed about getting the “Fist of Blue Sapphire” because it was necessary to use it as collateral to manipulate the pirates into doing as he pleased.”

“Bu, but……The pirates are scattered all over the place to escape from the eyes of the police. How did he contact them?”

“With the Merlion.”

Conan looked up to the Merlion statue that was next to him.

“Wasn’t there an incident when the Merlion spewed out red water? It was broadcast worldwide so I’m sure it also caught the attention of the pirates.  That must have been the signal to start carrying out their plan.—But what’s more important is what’s happening now!”

“Right. If we don’t do something quickly, it’ll be too late.”

Conan and Kid looked at Rishi.

“Even if you say that, I’m just one person….And we’ll need more proof before we can get the police to take action.”

“Then we won’t make it in time!”

“Isn’t there another way?”

The two of them urged Rishi and he raised his head saying, “I know.”

“Let’s ask Zhong Han Chen for advice. He holds a lot of influence over the military and the police. I’m sure he’ll lend us a hand!”

As soon as he said that, Rishi ran in the direction of the pedestrian bridge then,

“Rishi-san, one more question!”

Conan’s shout stopped him in his steps.

“What is it?”

“If the tanker really crashes into the city as planned, where do you think Leon-san would be at that time?”

“Well, let’s see….” Rishi who had stopped moving started thinking with his hand under his chin.

“My teacher is a cautious person so he’ll probably observe from some place far away. There’s a chance he may not even be in the country—Okay, I got to hurry!”

Rishi ran off again.”

“I see….thanks.”

Conan mumbled. The hot wind tousled his hair without sound.

Conan watched as Rishi’s back retreated and he made a sad expression.
