Chapter 9

The sun set and Marina Bay Sands was lit up and people started to gather at the deck of the event plaza that faced Marina Bay to watch the light and water show [Spectra].

Ran could be seen among the crowd. Seated on the deck with tourists, she used her mobile phone to contact Kogorou. However, even though the call tone kept ringing, there was no signs of the call going through.

“Geez, where did Otou-san go? The show has already started. Shinichi also ran off somewhere……”

Ran looked around the surrounding area, trying to search for any sign of Kogorou and Shinichi.

Sonoko, who had returned to the hotel from the hospital, was seated on the bed alone in the room that was dimly lit by only a night light. She hung her head and with a haah….she let out a sigh.

In front of the door of Sonoko’s room was Kyougoku who stood like a guardian statue just like he had at the hospital.

As night had fallen, the Merlion statue at Merlion Park was also lit up. The surrounding buildings and the Marina Bay Sands which was on the opposite shore were all lit up giving the tourists a full view of the beautiful night scenery around them.

Conan and Kid were standing at the end of the pier and peering at the ocean as they leaned against the handrails. The breeze that came from the sea gently shook their hair.

“Fuu~. Seriously, why did I get dragged into this case? Was it really Leon who left my card at the scene of Sherilyn-san’s murder?”

“No……”

“!”

Conan moved away from the handrails and walked off.

“Quite a fair amount of time had passed between the start of the investigation to the time the card that was stuck in the elevator was found……why do you think that’s the case?”

“Who was the one who found the card?”

“A police officer who happened to be there. He frantically went to report the finding to Inspector Aiden….”

Conan spoke about what he had read from the investigation findings he saw in Rishi’s house then his smartphone rang.

“Uh oh, it’s an update about the tanker’s trajectory.”

Conan looked at the data of the path analysis that was displayed and without thinking, he raised his voice.
“Wh, what is this?!”

The analysis was more precise that the one he showed Rishi and the circle which marked out the predicted area where the tanker was due to reach had become smaller. The place that the tanker was headed for was the right in front of Conan and Kid’s eyes—Marina Bay—!

“This is really bad! At this rate, the tanker will crash right into the hotel!”

Conan turned around— floating on the surface of the water in front of Marina Bay Sands was a glass prism that gave off a green light and numerous columns of water sprayed up towards the air simultaneously.

During that time.

The tanker that got hijacked by the pirates deviated greatly from its planned route and headed for the Singapore straits. The gigantic tanker brushed alongside the fishing boats that were out fishing, pushed them aside and continued moving forward.

Conan and Kid crossed the Esplanade Bridge which was built on Marina Bay and ran along the coast, heading for the Marina Bay Sands. However, there were spectators crowded everywhere and they were unable to move forward as quickly as they would have liked.

While Conan squeezed past the gaps between the spectators, he called Ran’s mobile phone but she did not pick up the call.

“Ran………! Please pick up….!”

The show that lasted for fifteen minutes had reached its climax.

The countless fountains shot straight up into the air and combined with the powerful music, the colours changed one after another. Furthermore, the jets of water became a mist displaying many colours like a huge kaleidoscope mesmerising the spectators with the illusions created by light and water.

Ran was among them, gazing at the show by herself in a lonely sort of way. Her handphone, which was vibrating within the bag placed next to her, went unnoticed—

At the restaurants that faced the straits, there were guests gathering together at its terrace seats.

As they approached the fence, they looked at the ocean with a shocked expression.

“It’s heading this way!”

A giant tanker was heading straight for Marina Bay, cutting through the calm sea where even small fishing boats are floating on.

Eventually, the tanker that had reached the mouth of Marina Bay, through its sheer mass, shattered the levee of the “Marina Barrage”. Large volumes of water flowed into the bay together with the tanker, causing huge waves to crash onto the roads along the coast.

Screams erupted from people who were crossing the numerous bridges built over Marina Bay for pedestrians as they fled together.

Even the people who were at the Sands Sky Park which was on the roof of Marina Bay Sands witnessed the tanker breaking the levee and gradually they started evacuating. The people from the observation deck, the pool as well as the restaurant and bar all headed for the elevators.

Even as the employees fled from the shops, Kogorou who was as drunk as a lord collapsed at the terrace seating of the Sky Bar.

Then, his smartphone which was placed on the table started ringing. It was from Ran.

In his drunken stupor, Kogorou took the call.

“He—y Ran! Are you having fun?”

“Otou-san? Where are you right now?!”

“Ha-nn?”

While holding onto his glass, Kogorou leaned over backwards. He could see the bow of a gigantic tanker turned towards the direction of the wide Marina Bay over the fence of the terrace.

“I don’t really know but I can see this really huge ass ship. Na ha ha ha-!”

“Hey, wait, Otou-san?! Don’t tell me you’re on the roof of the hotel? Hello? Hello?”

Even the event deck where the show had ended was crowded with people who were running away. Screams and angry yells came in all directions. The place was just full of panic.

Ran was in the midst of the crowd calling Kogorou over her phone. She looked up at Marina Bay Sands. For one reason or another, it seemed like Kogorou was at the Sands Sky Park.

“Urgh!”

Ran disconnected the call and ran in the direction of the hotel.

The tanker that had reached the Marina Bay sounded its steam whistle and turned towards its left, in the direction of the Benjamin Sheares bridge.

Inside the bridge of the tanker, Eugene Lim stood next to his subordinates who had control of the wheel.

“Can we make it?”

“I think so.”

Turning to the right, the stern barely grazed past the coast then sea water rushed up the roads along the coast, crashing into the cars that were driving along there.

Sonoko was lying on the bed inside her suite room while staring at a mascot doll, which resembled Kyougoku, hanging off her smartphone.

“Sonoko-san! Sonoko-san!”

Suddenly she could hear knocking on the door as well as the voice of Kyougoku who was standing in the corridor.

“……What?”

Sonoko got up from the bed and opened the door slightly, peering at Kyougoku’s face.

“It seems like something is happening outside. I think it’s better if we leave this place.”

At that moment, the phone in the room rang. Sonoko picked up the receiver of the phone that was placed on the side board in the living room.

“Yes……yes….”

While speaking on the phone, Sonoko pulled open the curtains and looked out of the window.

She could see large numbers of cars moving at great speeds on the roads beneath her eyes as well as people running on the pavements–.

“Yes, I understand.”

Sonoko hung up the phone and Kyougoku who was standing near the entrance of the room asked, “Who was it?”

“Someone from the police. If I go out carelessly, I might get attacked again. So they asked me to wait in the room. It seems like they’ll be sending someone to escort me.”

“B, but…”

“Enough, I’ll stay here.”

Sonoko said, turning her back toward Kyougoku.

“……Alright.”

Kyougoku left the room.

Kid lifted Conan onto his shoulders and while going against the flow of people running away, he headed in the direction of Marina Bay Sands. Kid slipped through the crowd and finally made to the rails on the side of the road.

“Crap, we can’t get closer to the hotel with this crowd!”

Conan gritted his teeth, looking at the Marina Bay Sands on the other side of the coast.

If they wanted to get to Marina Bay Sands, they had to cross one more bridge, the Helix bridge. However that bridge was still some distance away. Furthermore, the tanker was approaching that bridge.

Kid, who had Conan on his shoulders, spun, looking around. He seemed to have spotted something at the pier where a bumboat for tourists was moored.

“It’s do or die!”

With that, Kid ran in the direction of the pier.

Among the people at the pier was Kid’s assistant Jii Kounosuke.

Kid took his propeller that was attached to an engine from Jii and changed his clothes while heading for the boat before leaping off the edge of the pier.

Kid’s hang glider sprung open at the last minute over the water surface and they rose quickly, heading for the tanker.

“Woah, it’s Kid!”

“It’s Kid!!”

The people at the pier raised their heads, looking at the night sky and the police officers rushed over.

“It’s Kid! Kaito Kid Kid’s here!!”

Behind the police officers who were reporting via their wireless communicators, Jii wore a hat on his head and walked away.

The pool of the Sands Sky Park which usually had a large amount of people had fallen silent as the guests and staff have all evacuated.

Nakatomi Reijirou who stepped into the place together with Leon and Jamaluddin laughed “He he he” when he saw that there was no one at the pool.

“It’s like we reserved the place!”

Walking down the steps, he went to the pool side which was lined with deck chairs then suddenly, Jamaluddin leapt over the steps and pulled Reijirou away from the deck chairs.

“Hiii, wh, what the heck?!”

And Reijirou looked at the deck chairs—Kogorou was sitting there among the scattered bath towels.

“Sle, sleeping Kogorou!!”

“!!”

Leon who was standing on top of the steps became wide eyed. The three people became tense.

However Kogorou continued to be hunched over, his elbows on his thighs and there were no signs of him moving.

Eventually, gu gu gu……they could hear the sound of Kogorou’s breathing as he slept.

Dumbfounded, Leon placed his hand on his own forehead and gave a strained smile.

“……I really don’t know, just about him….”

Carried by Kid who was using his hang glider, Conan continued to call Ran using his smart phone while high in the sky. However the line was engaged and he could not get through.

(It’s no good! The call won’t go through……!)

Then at that moment—A pirate who was standing at the bow of the tanker fired the rocket launcher he had hoisted on his shoulder. The rocket that came out made a straight trajectory for Kid’s hang glider—!

“!!”

Kid suddenly rotated his hang glider, dodging the rocket. The rocket that Kid dodged drew an arc above the sea and exploded on the streets in front of Marina Bay Sands. A tremendous blast blew away the cars driving along and sent them tumbling on the road.

The pirate continued to fire another rocket. Once more, Kid rotated his hang glider to avoid it and the rocket blew up on the water surface, shooting a giant water column upwards.

Ran, who arrived at the Marina Bay Sands from the event plaza ran around the now deserted lobby on the first floor. As people evacuated in a panic, the ground had carry on cases, hats and so on scattered across it.

“Oh come on! Where are you?! Otou-san!”

The rocket launched by the pirate struck the botanical gardens that was directly linked to the Marina Bay Sands – Gardens By The Bay. A tremendous sound was made at the same time black smoke danced in the air.

Leon, who was at the Sands Sky Park, looked at the black plumes of smoke that rose one after another from the ground.

“Fu fu—” He laughed then unable to hold back his glee, he let out a hearty laugh.

“Look. This city will be born again! With my hands—!!”

He walked towards Jamaluddin, in high spirits.

“Mu!”

Jamaluddin’s brow twitched as though he had noticed something and he looked at the end of a dimly lit pavement.

Leon and Reijirou also focused their attention in that direction—they were able to see a figure holding a gun. And the muzzle of the that gun was pointed at Leon and the rest.

“Why are you….?!”

At that moment, a dazzling light shone on the pool where Leon and the rest were at.

It was the search light of a military helicopter. Multiple helicopters flew above Leon’s head, making loud noises.

“Guh……!”

The helicopters’ rotors sent down a strong gust of wind which seemed like it was going to blow the attache case that Leon was holding away.

The military helicopters that flew above the Marina Bay Sands were heading for the tanker.

When the wind became weaker, the person who had armed himself with a gun slowly approached Leon and the rest. Reijirou raised his hands squealing a “Hiii—”

“Wa, wait.”

Leon raised his palm in the direction of the figure.

“……I’m surprised. To think that you had the ability to make your way here….Even I can’t predict your actions to this extent , Rishi….”

The one who appeared from the darkness was Rishi Ramansan, who was holding a hand gun. While aiming the gun at Leon and the others, he stopped moving.

“Since it has come down to this, I’ll be honest with you. I planned all of this. Shall we have a chat? So put that dangerous thing away.”

Leon said in a calm tone and Rishi furrowed his brows even more.

“Leon-sensei, aren’t you the one who’s misunderstanding something….”

The helicopters that flew over the Marina Bay Sands started to hover right above the tanker. Soldiers descended from the helicopters that stopped mid-air using cables.

The soldiers that landed on the deck went straight for the bridge.

They opened the door, guns at a ready position.

“Freeze!!”

However the bridge was already empty.

Right before the soldiers barged their way into the bridge.

The pirates descended the rope that was tied to the rails of the deck. They boarded the numerous small boats that were moored to the tanker separately and slipping into the darkness, they left the tanker behind them.

After making sure that there was no one in the bridge, one soldier held his wireless communicator in his hand.

“There’s no one here. Let’s stop the ship now.”

The tanker that was on auto navigation had the planned route displayed on its monitor. The planned route was supposed to go around the back of Marina Bay but somehow it got changed along the way. The modified route would cause the tanker to take a sharp turn to the left and collide into the side of the Flower Dome which was in front of the Marina Bay Sands.

Before long, the tanker followed its altered course and made a large turn to the left.

Doooooonnnnn—a huge sound was produced as the port front of the tanker collided with the coast causing the road along the coast to buckle and the patrol cars driving on top of it rolled over.

At the same time the tanker got forced up the coast, stopping it, small boats reached the shore near Marina Bay Sands and the pirates got off the boats one after another. Then they suddenly started shooting at the police squadron that were keeping vigil along the seaside.

“The tanker stopped! Kid!”

“We’ll leave this area to the police!”

Kid who looked down at the situation on the ground from above the city streets made a large u-turn.
